Here I am

20 10 2009

Did you miss me? :)

Forgive me for being away for so long, I just got kind of bored with writing.

How’ve you all been doing?

I’ve been doing good, really good. Achieved an amazing milestone in my career, got promoted, have the best career ever, yada yada.

Still no boy though.

One of the most profound statements I ever heard about the expectations of marriage in our society was: “Girls are ingrained to think that their life until they get married is nothing more than the tetr (opening credits) of a sitcom.”

And I can’t seem to stop internalizing it.

Anyway, how’ve you all been?

Yay! Welcome back. :-) I just discovered your blog a few days ago and I am enraptured! I’m an American who has always had a heart for Egypt and learning about the culture through the eyes of your writing is fascinating and funny. Plus, Tofi habibi is from Cairo, so having some insight is helpful. :-)

been good, am sure you wont remember me… but thanks for asking :P
am really glad to see u back, i hope it will be permanent :)

while i always have stuff going on in my life, to which am thankful , eastern society has deliberately entrapped women in this pre-marriage frozen status where u have to marry to break the ice , then i moved here and saw that a woman can actually have a bollywood movie on her own, without even looking or compromising ;)

yet , i have never had a boy, so i probably dont know what am missing :P

Here in France, weddings can easily look like closing credits. Pictures from childhood to bachelorette party are displayed (usually too many). It always makes me think of a tribute to a dead girl or that she will not be allowed any more fun once she’s married.

I guess that’s why people cry in weddings :)

Yes, missed you quite a bit. Was hoping for tales of Ramadan. I heard about the ban on the niqab at Al-Azhar… but then nothing further… hoped you would tell us what the fallout has been over that.

I’ve only ever dated three men and I married two of them (one after the other, obviously) so perhaps I am just very lucky. It’s nice to have a partner to share things with. I think that is the best part of marriage. So be selective.
