Sindbad--an iconic cartoon we watched as kids

Sindbad--an iconic cartoon we watched as kids

I wonder why is it that I can never find T-shirts that are totally Egyptian and/or Arab? The closest I’ve come to what I have in mind are Zafir’s T-shirts (right) and they’re not exactly great quality, selection, or prints.

I’d love a T-shirt with UmKalthoum on it for instance, things that when you see you think “Egypt” or “Arab” (and not a camel or pyramid, please). I’m so tired of seeing everyone walking around with Rolling Stones T-shirts, or things that are iconic to non-Arabs or Egyptians. Business Idea right there!

i hate seeing 14 yr old kids walking around in IRON MAIDEN or ROLLING STONES t-shirts when they couldn’t even sing one song belonging to the band. do i listen to iron maiden? no. hence me not wearing their t-shirt.

its the same here seeing a little blonde girl in a mini-skirt or some random asian guy walking around the streets of Australia with that Palestinian keffiyeh around their neck, with no clue what it stands for.

sorry – its just that fashion with meaning/symbols associated with them should be worn with knowledge.

i shall shut up now and stop going slightly off-topic.

oh i used to love sindibad soooo much! alhough my favourite shall remain Judy Abbott, or may be Nawwar? can’t decide. but yes, i agree, arabs should portray their culture with more penash and vigour, and stop thinking that the grass is greener on the other side – it isn’t. its mu3affan and kharbaan :)

@ Ange: It’s called cultural appropriation. ‘They’ think it’s cool, therefore it must be.

@ forsoothsayer: shukran! ah, I know the place. Will definitely ask him next time I go.

@ jessyz: her stuff looks really cool. Thanks!

I just found your blog from ange’s page (mama I married a masry) and I think I’m mildly infatuated with you. Purely platonically of course. Its super rare to find a practicing hijabi who isn’t also close-minded. Maybe its something to do with wrapping the cloth too tight.. hmm…

Me= American convert, married to a masry, living in Maadi but returning to the states in a month inshAllah. I would love to meet up with you if possible. Its so hard to find someone I can relate to here who also wears the scarf.

Hence my infatuation.

Email me mollyannelian[at]gmail.com if I can’t find your email to contact you first. I totally didn’t mean that to come out so stalkerish.
